Dude – Talk about a series of unfortunate events! First you get duped into going to a bar with (the horror) tea-totalers, then you get assaulted by a guy who’s worried about insurance adjusters going AWOL. To a hippy-boomer, Slushy’s comments must hit close to home. I just cringed listening to them. All I could think was look out Slushy, someday you’ll realize you’re plugged into the matrix and reveling in your ignorance.

And what an ironic analogy…Insurance adjusters?…Insurance adjusters? He probably meant to say, social worker, grocery clerk, lathe operator, paramedic, or some other vocation that makes positive contributions to society… ‘Cause I mean when your “house floods” and an insurance adjuster “decides to show up to do their job” YOU get fucked Slushy! What better example of the system and how it fucks you is there than fucking insurance adjusters…

The moral: Don’t worry Slushy, when someone wants to go do their own thing, it’s just that, their own thing. It’s got nothing to do with you.

…I mean shit! I would love, love, love to deal with a hippy insurance adjuster! Just once. Maybe I’d finally get some sympathy from one of those pricks.

Roll with it Dude.

Dam it George - I was just about to send an apology to 'Slushy', since he was brave enuf to listen to my show and reply to my drunken aspersions on his latest. But now that you mention it - 'insurance adjusters' makes for a peculiar argument against hippies!? And you make another good point - of course I was agitated - beling lead to believe I was in for a free night's drinking, and finding out - too late - that the hosts don't drink - that's just not right!

Anyway George, I think you should listen to Slushy's reply, and then calm yourself down with Ted's thoughful response on Island Podcasting.

Great show though I have to say Dave was really off base with his criticism and generalization of hippies as lazy. This sounds an awful lot like the standard right wing characterization of "lazy liberals" that has pissed me off since I first heard it 20 years or so ago.

He totally misses the fact that it was not about dropping out into nothing but in many cases was about embracing a vision that was not the one shoved down their throat by post-war media.

The commune derision made it particularly evident that he was using talking points not research and experience. Most people who started intentional communities had a vision of a way of life different than the one they had been brought up in that had (and continues to IMO) brought about wars, environmental damage, and inequity. And this took an incredible amount of work. Here's an article from 1970 that does a good job of illustrating that vision. And there's a happy ending to that story - they're still around, have several sister communities, one of which Sage and I seriously considered moving to.

The sad part for me, though, is that there doesn't seem to be as much idealism now as there once was. Reading the articles in Mother Earth News it feels like the people writing them had hoped that by now the world would have changed to be more like their vision. Sadly that hasn't happened yet and it seems that this generation lacks a similar vision - at least on as large a scale.
