Dude;
I was sitting in my car in the parking lot of a nearby Save-On Food Store puffing on a cigar while I waited for Mrs. B to finish the weekly grocery shopping.

I observed some young people (2 boys & 2 girls about 19 to 21 years old) walk out of the store with a bag of snacky type food walk to their Jeep YJ open the door & proceeded to dump out approx 2 bags worth of loose garbage from the jeep onto the ground. Then got into their jeep and drove away. Amazingly there was a garbage receptacle about 4 meters away in plain view.

I was aghast. I thought that young people of today were concerned for the planet, but apparently not. It's not like there's any lack of education on the subject of environmental responsibility so I can only assume that young people just don't care about the state of the planet or their future on it.
I generalize of course.

Here's an attitude that better displays their thoughtless behaviour and let's see if these young people can get on board with it.

We (meaning us older folks who will die in the next 30 years or so anyway) should consume, waste and burn every natural resource like there is no tomorrow. We should all drive a Hummer or Escalade with V12 engines that guzzle gas and have the catalytic converters removed so that they belch black smoke and CO2 into the ozone. No more worrying about building good hybrid crap.
Let's dump our old air conditioners in the ditch, pour our old motor oil, anti-freeze and other toxic materials down the sewers. Burn out our lawns and fields with fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides and water them 12 hours every day.
To hell with the birds or the bees.

Let's all live life without regard for anyone but ourselves until we die fat bloated pigs.
Why not?
If those young people have no concern for the world that they will inherit, then why the fuck should I?
Let's live our lives to total excess and drop our garbage where we are.
We'll take what we want from this planet and leave the young people thrusting for water and chocking on a toxic atmosphere and then remind them of their behavior later when we see them in hell.

Ok, maybe I'm a little angry.

Thanks for taking the time to comment Bunky - always much appreciated! I'm pleased to reply that my 20 year old son would for sure be just as outraged at the site of kids dumping their garbage in the lot as you or I. However, he goes a little further with regards to the environment, and calls me out for my own shortcomings; mainly, my consumption of meat! (He gives me pamphlets I'm too afraid to look at in case I too see the truth and become a vegetarian!). In fact he blames a lot of the world's ills on my generation, and holds everyone responsible.

I'm quite proud of him for his concern, and his efforts to do what he feels is right, although I don't take kindly to being blamed for the sad state of humanity. Perhaps like you I'm near a point where I just want to die in peace, and without the burden of guilt. On the other hand, I also think he's right - we all need to be doing more to right the wrongs around us. I guess there is no easy way out.

As for the litterers, just give me an electric cattle prod (the ones they won't need after I stop consuming meat)

Dude:
Just wanted to let you know that I found this episode absolutely fascinating (I was going to say that I "enjoyed" it, but that's not quite the right word, because you seemed so down and depressed, and I didn't derive joy from that). It was intriguing. I had to drive an hour and three quarters to work today (I was travelling to an offsite location) and, for the second time in about a month, I turned to the dicksnjanes podcast to provide my listening entertainment; you didn't disappoint.

It's empty and facile for me to leave you a comment saying something like "buck up, you're not such a bad guy and things'll turn around", mostly because all of that stuff probably happened before I even started typing this comment. Nevertheless, I feel as though I have to leave some evidence of my sentiments - I hope you're feeling better; you seem like a nice enough fellow, don't let the bastards get you down.

Someday, though, we'll have to chat about your unfair generalizations about lawyers :-) We're not all vermin.

Thanks so much for the comment Junior! It' a real lift! Funny - I get an email informing me when someone posts a comment, but I'm always so happy to get feedback that I won't let myself read the email - I jump to the blog and read it there - as it reading it at the blog connects it more closely to the podcast. Yes, comments mean that much to me. I am very happy to have you as a listener and feel so pleased you enjoy the podcast - thank you. And yes, I'm mostly out of the slump - stay tuned!

I do the same thing with comments on my own blog. Looking forward to the next episode.
